UP 4014
Title:  UP 4014
Description:  Big Boy 4014 thunders through Emory, Utah with a manifest freight. 4014 had been on the Union Pacific roster for around a year at the time of this 1942 image, taken by a UP company photographer. 4014 would pull its last regular-service freight train on July 21, 1959, arriving at Cheyenne at 1:50 AM with 88 loads and 9 empties. After its final run, the 4014 would be donated to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, California, and would be moved there in the following years. In the mid 2010s, UP looked to restore one of the 8 remaining Big Boys to excursion service, and so the 4014 was taken out of display, moved to Cheyenne, and refurbished, returning to steam in 2019, just in time for the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. UP 4022
Title:  UP 4022
Description:  The original bulders photo for UP 4022. The second group of 5 Big Boys was nearly identical to the earlier set of 20, with a few minor exceptions. Due to a wartime rationing of alloy steels, the 4020-4024 series was slightly heavier than their earlier siblings, and the units also had their air-brake cooling pipes moved from the front handrails to behind the air pump shield over the front pilot. By 1951, the original 19 Big Boys had been rebuilt with the pipes moved to this location as well. The tenders were also redesigned, with the mechanical lubrication system removed, allowing for an extra 1000 gallons to be carried in the tenders, which were classed as 25 C-4 and numbered 401-405. Title:  4024 Fresh From ALCO
Description:  Big Boy 4024 poses on the turntable at Ogden shortly after its delivery to the railroad. Due to wartime traffic demands, a second group of five Big Boys was ordered by UP from ALCO in 1943. These five (UP 4020-4024) would supplement the original 20 (UP 4000-4019) on the Wasatch grade. Being delivered in 1944, these five received little fanfare, and were immediately thrown into service, save for a photo op with UP 4024.
