Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the fall of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 3151
Title:  CN 3151
Description:  A CN container train crosses the Rat River and bisects the Rat River Wildlife Area as it speeds southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI, on 24 Sep. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3151 and CN 3848. The locomotives are passing the foundations of the old SOO facilities here. These foundations rest along both sides of the tracks about 700' northwest of the actual junction. If the direction of view in the photograph (http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Content.aspx?dsNav=N:4294963828-4294963814&dsRecordDetails=R:IM24898) on the Wisconsin Historical Society website is labeled accurately, a coal tower and shed stood on the left side of the tracks and a water tower and another shed to the right. The CN microwave tower in the background stands at the approximate site of where the SOO/WC Medina Station depot once stood on Hwy. M.

GTW 4623
Title:  GTW 4623
Description:  GTW 4623 crosses W. 2nd St. while working the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 25 Sep. '20. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible to the right. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

CN 5340
Title:  CN 5340
Description:  CN 5340 parallels Union St. and passes the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it sorts cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 25 Sep. '20. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

IC 9563
Title:  IC 9563
Description:  A CN local passes the Main St. overpass as it shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background to the right. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

CN 5702 and CN 8865
Title:  CN 5702 and CN 8865
Description:  A CN container train traverses the west leg of the wye and approaches the Main St. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The locomotives are passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background to the right. The new, concrete railroad ties which were recently laid out next to the main line have even more recently been picked up and re-stacked.

Description:  A CN local parallels Lush St. and crosses Kaukauna St. as it heads northeast via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 2 Oct. '20. The locomotive will momentarily foul Kaukauna St. while a crew member opens the railroad swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal to permit marine traffic. This grade crossing used to include Lush St. and Chute St., but those streets have been reconfigured. The defunct Menasha Municipal Utility plant, purchased by Simply Incredible Foods in Jun. '14, dominates the horizon to the left. The former Noffke Lumber facility is partially visible to the right. It still has a spur, but the turnout for it was removed years ago.

Description:  A CN local crosses W. Spencer St. and parallels S. Whitman Ave. as it heads south at Appleton, WI, on 7 Oct. '20. I'm not sure who originally laid this track, which once enabled interchange traffic between the former C&NW yard (behind me) and the former SOO yard (in the distance). The former SOO main line passes under the overpass upon which the MoW vehicles are parked. The W. College Ave. overpass is in the background. The facility partially visible to the right has a spur which has not been used for quite a while.

Title:  IC 9563
Description:  A CN local parallels 4th St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI, on 9 Oct. '20. Local was preparing to head for Hilbert. The blue facility in the background is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI, in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. (built in 1960), the tan building partially visible at the far left. The blue facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s (according to tax records, this facility was built in 1966), they primarily processed waste paper. Both facilities clearly used to receive rail service, but do not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of them.

Description:  A CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group, IPG, 741 4th St., as it heads east via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 9 Oct. '20. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St. on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO tracks. It’s the same facility, but the address changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. They receive rail service from the other end of the facility, but they, obviously, do not currently receive service from this end. Local was headed for Hilbert.

Description:  A CN local, with 11 cars, crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 17 Oct. '20. Train was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. However, a recent contributor to that site believes it was built after 1919. A photograph caption in the Post-Crescent on 29 May 1974 states that the bridge was "nearly 50 years old." Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Title:  IC 2726
Description:  A CN container train passes Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at Neenah, WI, on 24 Oct. '20. Train had two locomotives, IC 2726 pulling as well as CN 2689 pushing. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel along the other side of the train. The building in the background to the left was home to Plexus' Neenah Design Center, 55 Jewelers Park Dr., Neenah, WI. Erected in 1987 and expanded in 2000, it has stood vacant since 2017, when they decided they needed another new office building in downtown Neenah for some stupid reason. At least one tenant has occupied part of the building recently.

CN 4791 + Track Evaluation System
Title:  CN 4791 + Track Evaluation System
Description:  An interesting and unique CN train heads north past the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Oct. '20. Train had one locomotive, CN 4791. Consist included CN 414852 DGRMS Test Car, CN 1057 TEST Track Evaluation System. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Galloway Co., Inc., an active rail customer along a remnant of the former C&NW main line, is partially visible in the background to the left. The facility was started in 1927 at 601 S. Commercial St. as Neenah Milk Products, Galloway took it over in 1955. The facility has been expanded over the old right-of-way since some portions of the main line were pulled up.

GTW 4907
Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  A CN local hugs the bluff, passes the Vulcan Heritage Park, and passes the S. Memorial Dr. bridge over the Fox River as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 30 Oct. '20. Local was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The MILW rails used to run parallel along this side of the active rails. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Title:  CN 0033
Description:  CN 0033 was part of the consist of a CN container train passing N. Lake St. as it headed northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 31 Oct. '20. I usually put the camera away after I shoot the locomotives when a container train rolls by. I had to do a double take and hastily grab the camera when I noticed this car. This was the better of the spray-and-pray shots.

CN 3267 and CN 2985
Title:  CN 3267 and CN 2985
Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 31 Oct. '20. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the lead locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church. One of Neenah's bland, unimaginative, modern buildings, posing as architecture, stands in the background to the left.

IC 9601 and IC 3115
Title:  IC 9601 and IC 3115
Description:  A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) at 1430 hours on 1 Nov. '20. The train is about to transition to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. To the left, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood. To the right you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. and was completed ca. 3 Jul. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug.

IC 3106
Title:  IC 3106
Description:  A CN local crosses Garfield Ave. at the northwest end of the former C&NW yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 4 Nov. '20. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., is partially visible to the left. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of 2016, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hardworking Americans by moving production out-of-state. The former C&NW depot/yard office is partially visible to the right. The station sign says Neenah but it is actually located in Menasha. The border between the Twin Cities is about 750 feet to the south (right). The depot/yard office was built by the C&NW in 1965 at a cost of $15,000.

IC 3106
Title:  IC 3106
Description:  A CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group, IPG, 741 4th St., and crosses the former Manitowoc St. grade crossing as it heads east via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 6 Nov. 12 Apr. ’99.

The local is preparing service Neenah Paper, 135 N. Commercial St., via a remnant of the former C&NW main line. Some sections of the former main line have been removed, but other sections remain to facilitate rail service to several industries. Some of Neenah's bland, unimaginative, contemporary edifices, posing as architecture, dominate the horizon. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously.

IC 3103
Title:  IC 3103
Description:  A CN local services Neenah Paper, 135 N. Commercial St., via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Neenah, WI, on 12 Nov. '20. The company was founded at Neenah, WI, as the Patten Paper Co. by Azel Wilder Patten in 1873. The original 150’ by 40’ paper mill was built in ‘74 on the former site of the Empire Flour Mill and several smaller businesses. In ‘81, A. W. Patten built a second Patten Paper Co. mill at Appleton, WI. Samuel A. Cook and Frank T. Russell purchased the Neenah mill in early ‘85 and incorporated as the Neenah Paper Co., with A. W. Patten as president. The company was later taken over by the Kimberly family. Some references state they acquired a controlling interest in ’93, others state John A. Kimberly, Jr., bought the mill outright in 1900. When the original portion of the paper mill was built, 4 other sizeable industries stood between its west wall and Cedar St., now N. Commercial St. Numerous additions were erected over the years as the mill expanded westward and northward (some additions were built on pilings above the Fox River). By ’26, when their Mediterranean Revival-style office building (partially visible at far left) was constructed, they occupied the entire small peninsula east of Commercial St. Neenah Paper Co. officially became a division of Kimberly-Clark Corp. in ‘56, and operated as such until it was spun off in 2004. Some sections of the former C&NW main line have been removed, but other sections, like this one, remain to facilitate rail service to several industries.
