Title:
ERIE 4-6-0 #831
Description:
This is one of the most striking photos of the elegant, simple, sleek Erie ten-wheelers I've seen. Originally built for the New York, Lake Erie & Western RR as their #350, it is a class G-1 built in 1889. I can see this serving as an excellent prototype for a brass model locomotive. Harold K. Vollrath photo

Title:
Erie 2-8-8-8-2 #5016 - A Rare Triplex Loco
Description:
Between 1914-1916, the Baldwin Locomotive Works built 3 triplex locomotives for the Erie Railroad. Labeled class XA for experimental, they were built to extremely high tractive force to move trains over steep inclines. The locomotive had one high pressure set of cylinders and two low pressure sets. The third set of drivers were under the tender, technically making it the world's largest tank engine in a way! This photo appears to be a Baldwin Works photo taken at Philadelphia.

ERIE 4-6-2 #2907
Description:
A proud engineer leans out the window of this shiny new Pacific built by Alco-Schenectady in 1917 and classified as an Erie K-2-A loco. On the back of the photo, the unknown photographer wrote "About 1915" but it wasn't built yet. The date would be closer to 1917-18 due to the spotless sheen on the loco.

Description:
Nice action shot of Erie Pacific #2931 stopped at the passenger station in Hammond, IN. As a Hoosier, I'm always happy to post an Indiana related photo like this one! This is now a 16 mile Erie Lackawanna bicycle path starting near Crown Point and ending in downtown Hammond near this location. If you look carefully, you can see 3 watchtowers in a row down the track. Twenty of these "USRA heavy" units were built by Baldwin and Alco-Richmond in 1919 for the Erie RR. All lasted into the early 1950's. Specifics - K5 class, 79" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 27x28" cylinders, engine weight of 306,000 lb, tractive effort of 43,925 lb. Lamar M. Kelley photo

Description:
This is a stunning ten-wheeler with the white walls and gleaning steam chest, obviously the pride of the Erie RR at the time. Specifics - 69" drivers, 200 psi, 19" x 26" cylinders. Unfortunately no photographer was credited with taking this great action shot in an undisclosed location. With Dave Korhammer's help (see comment below) and based on the location of the Union Terminal Cold Storage Company (partial name in background), I now believe that the location is Jersey City, NJ.

ERIE 2-10-2 #4013 & ERIE 2-8-2 #3000
Description:
Great action shot of a double-header pulling a string of freiight cars that disappear into the distance. Lead loco #4013 was a 1916 Alco built "Santa Fe" type locomotive. According to www.Steamlocomtoive.com "Their rough riding qualities were problematical until revised counterbalancing smoothed the way. All of the Erie's 2-10-2s were renowned for their great power, whether as road engines or pushers." ERIE #3000 was a 1911 Baldwin product, the first of its N-1 class to be built. No date given for this action shot so an arbitrary one was used. Unknown photographer.
