H 88 with an undecorated unit |
Description: |
NS elected to take delivery of their new GEs in primer, and paint them in their own shops, rather than wait for GE to do it, thus getting them in service quicker. I cant help think of all those Athearn units I saw in hobby shops, with "undecorated" marked on the box. Sometimes life imitates art. |

Western visitors |
Description: |
A pair of UP units has todays 13T at the old DLW station as it waits for a new crew to go south on the CP. 13T was a good bet for off line power, sometimes not the top of the line stuff. This C40-8 and SD40-2 are now far from the top tier of road power on UP. Still, they are a welcome change to the onslaught of wide cab GEs that were taking over the country at the time. |

13T meets Grinstein |
Description: |
13T waits for a recrew at QD behind a pair of BNSF Grinstein green SD70s. They were not typically seen off coal trains, never mind on the east coast, so this was a treat. As usual, clouds ruled the day. In a twist of irony, I would see this unit again in 15 years, freshly repainted in the BNSF "Swoosh" scheme, as the DPU on an empty Texas Gulf Utilities train at Gravette Ark, on the KCS. |

Western surprise |
Description: |
The first four or so years I watched the 205 and 206 trains, I dont think I ever saw any foreign power on them. It was almost always a pair of NS GEs, though occasionally an SD would slip in. Then something changed, and western power, mostly UP, started showing up on a sporadic basis. This is one of those days, as 205 comes back from CP with its Taylor pick up. It will couple to the train it brought down from Ayer, and off to Buffalo and Chicago. The ex DLW station and Marconi tower stand watch over the action. |

Flowery river running |
Description: |
H 88 along the Susquehanna River between Campville and Owego. The hillside there has a variety of flowers, often making for a pretty scene, though the trees have by this time grown up so much that river views are a challenge in the summer. Its still a pretty spot. The power is not unusual, except that it was more typically GE's. To my 1970's mind, locals usually got smaller power, mostly 4 axle, though in today's world, there isn't much of that left. Today we have a pair of the newest and best first tier power on a job that essentially runs NYSW and CP interchange to Binghamton from Gang Mills. |

Getting into training |
Description: |
NS had a program where it would send around a special train to communities along their lines to train first responders in various aspects of railroad operations, haz mat handling, emergency response and other such topics. This was done with both classroom and hands on sessions to familiarize the participants with practices and the types of equipment they would be dealing with. The train made a visit to Binghamton, where we see it parked on the old DLW westbound station siding. |

Western power on locals |
Description: |
For a while in 2005 and 2006, UP and BNSF power were showing up routinely on Gang Mills-Binghamton turn H 88. Today is one of those days, as a UP GE leads the train through the signals at west Endicott. |

Big power for the spur |
Description: |
Conrail never ran anything bigger than a GP 40 on the Vestal Spur, the remnant of the DLW main through Johnson City and a short distance into Vestal. Most of the traffic was coal for NYSEGs Goudy Station. NS did a major tie replacement and surfacing in late 2002, which improved conditions markedly, though they were using C40-8s there right from the start. Todays power is a western visitor, a UP SD 70MAC, a unit intended for more serious endeavors. Oh well-whatever gets the coal there. It has a cut for Goudy on the spur, rolling past another cut on the three pocket. |

Borrowed |
Description: |
H 88 for a while ran with a variety of western power. Sometimes it was BNSF, mostly with NS power, though there was a pair of GEs that ran for several weeks; and sometimes UP power would mix in. This set ran for several weeks in late 2005. Wonder if UP missed them?? |

Bow coal |
Description: |
Coal trains to New England occasionally got western power when they were doing test burns of Powder River coal. This is one of those trains, waiting on the CP crew at QD on the NS at Binghamton. Apparently, someone on the UP is not especially proud of his operation. Note the railfan chase vehicle parked at left. |
