Early Winter Big Boy

Description:  A cloud of smoke and steam billows behind 4016 as it rolls through Lynch. The 4000s were known for their spectacular plumes of smoke, and these were especially prevalent in winter, the clouds of smoke and steam looming over the snowy landscape. 4016 has encountered light snow along the route, hence the snow on the pilot. Title:  Light Engine 4005
Description:  In mid-November 1956, 4005 trundles through the yard in Laramie. The coaling tower looms over the cab of the engine. This tower, along with most of the other engine faclities in Laramie, is long gone today. 4005, however, would survive the end of steam on the UP. The unit was stored as of November 30, 1958, and was marked as unserviceable in 1960. Ten years would pass before the engine would donated to the Forney Museum in Denver, Colorado in 1970. Big Boy 4009
Title:  Big Boy 4009
Description:  Union Pacific 4009 trundles past a string of boxcars in the Cheyenne yard. The 4000-class behemoth was built in September 1941, and was equipped with all the lastest in steam technology. These units were equiped with a pressure lubrication system for the tender, 68" drivers, and roller bearings on all the axles. Despite this modernity, the 4000s were not immune from the march of progress. As diesels became ever more prominent on the Wyoming Division, the 4000s found their usefullness on the decline. By 1959, the final Big Boys were retired, and many, such as 4009, would be cut up for scrap. 4009 would meet the torch in May, 1963, after 18 years of service on the UP. Servicing At Cheyenne
Title:  Servicing At Cheyenne
Description:  UP 4011 takes on a new load of coal prior to another run across the Wasatch in August, 1957. 4011 would stay in service until the very end of UP steam in 1959. The engine would pull the second-to-last freight train ever pulled by a Big Boy, arriving in Cheyenne on the morning of July 21 with 62 loads and 28 emptys from Laramie. 4011 even outlasted its brethren in retirement, being outlived only by its 8 preserved sisters. 4011 would meet its fate on June 14, 1963, just under 4 years since it pulled its last train into Cheyenne. UP 4013
Title:  UP 4013
Description:  Big Boy 4013 negotiates yard trackage in Cheyenne in late August, 1958. The gargantuan Big Boy was the pinnacle of UP steam, with a power matched by few. The 4000s would become famous with railfans for their massive size and tremendous pulling power for this reason. However, no amount of fame would save 4013 from the impending end of steam. In 1959, the engine would pull its last train, and was withdrawn from service. For nearly four years the engine would sit stored in Cheyenne, before finally being cut up in April, 1963.
