Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:  UP 6562, UP 8786, UP 8251
Description:  A trio of colorful visitors from out-of-town lead a unit train of tank cars past the Hwy. G overpass and parallel to Hwy. 41 while headed southwest via CN, former C&NW, rails at Snells, WI on 3 Mar. '19. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails can be seen running parallel along this side of the train.

Description:  A CN through freight approaches the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) and parallels Harrison St. as it heads southwest past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 Mar. '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 2188 and BCOL 4623. I think the lead unit is the one throwing the smoke. The overpass, erected to eliminate the grade crossing, opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07.

Title:  CN 3077
Description:  A CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches Kampo Rd. (technically no longer Kampo Rd.) as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 5 Mar. '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 3077 pulling and CN 3107 pushing. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel on this side of the train. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

CN 4711
Title:  CN 4711
Description:  A CN local crosses the North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge as it heads southwest at Menasha, WI on 8 Mar. '19. In the foreground, a flock of common goldeneyes has been kicked up by the passing train. This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public on 23 Jun. '18. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., can be seen on the south bank of the river in the background. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state. The TC Transcontinental, Inc., facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., is partially visible on the north bank of the river at left. The piers supporting the former C&NW bridge (also in use by CN) are partially visible under this bridge.

The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. This new view of the railroad bridge is interesting, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this bridge from the river bank.

The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, stands in the background. Plexus stands on the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. Some people like the style and appearance of this new building, I do not. To me, this and other recent additions to the local skyline are abominations. Looking east from the new Loop-the-Lake bridge (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). Title:  IC 3120, IC 9565, CN 9424
Description:  A trio of CN locomotives rest in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Mar. '19. IC 9565 and CN 9424 rest on the main line. I'm not sure of their origin or destination, but it’s odd to see two locomotives passing through sans freight cars. IC 3120, the local power, rests on the yard lead. The north leg of the wye is hidden beneath the snow on this side of IC 3120.

Description:  A pair of interesting visitors from out-of-town lead a through freight along Union St. while setting out and picking up cars at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Mar. '19. I'm not sure why, but I get a kick out of finding locomotives with mis-matched number boards. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

CSX 3032 and CSX 3105
Title:  CSX 3032 and CSX 3105
Description:  A pair of interesting visitors from out-of-town lead a through freight passing the former Sherry St. grade crossing and approaching the Main St. overpass at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Mar. '19. I'm not sure why, but I get a kick out of finding locomotives with mis-matched number boards. The train is passing the historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., Neenah, WI. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 (construction commenced the previous year). It was briefly (ca. ‘93) known as the Northern Pacific Hotel, almost certainly a reference to the short-lived corporate relationship between the WC and NP railroads. It was owned by Ole M. Lyken by ’14; it was known as the Lyken Hotel ca. ‘20. Circa ‘23-‘24 it was a grocery store owned by Mrs. Mary E. Lyken, Ole’s widow (he passed away in ’23). From at least ‘28 until ‘39, it was the Mayerl Grocery, owned by Mayme Mayerl. At some point it was turned into a tavern and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. Previous names of the bar include (in no particular order), Susie’s Trackside, Chesapeake Pub, Gigi’s, Mychal’s Bar (Mychal’s On Sherry Street), Sit and Sip Tavern, et al. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from that building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.
