ICG SD20 2035
Title:  ICG SD20 2035
Description:  ICG SD20 2035, near Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois, October 13, 1987, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built as Southern SD24 6320 in February 1960 (c/n 25669) on EMD Order 5606, it was acquired by Precision National Corporation during 1978 and put into the PNC lease fleet, retaining the Southern paint and road number. It was leased to the BN during 1978-79, and sometime after that lease period it was sent to Morrison-Knudsen and rebuilt. It returned in green paint as PNC 1820, de-turbocharged and dynamic brakes disabled, and went back into PNC's lease fleet until sometime during 1982, when it was acquired by ICG and remanufactured to SD20 2035. It later became IC 2035, then IHB 2924. By the date pictured it lost its ICG light array between the numberboards. The scene is at the east end of the ICG's Iowa Division, climbing up off the lakefront suburban Electric Division and entering the Saint Charles Air Line, which will carry it over the south Chicago Loop area, the leads to LaSalle Street Station, then over the leads to Dearborn Street Station (closed), Union Station, then back down to earth at Union Avenue.

Number 2539 was built in August 1965 as GM&O GP35 641 (c/n 30268) on EMD Order 7794. later becoming ICG 2539. It was rebuilt by VMV (Paducah, Kentucky) during October 1990 to BN GP39V 2983. Also seen is CN SD40 5210, class GF-30k, built by GMD during September 1971 (c/n A2527) on order C338, sold for scrap during December 2002. As I recall, both trains were stopped for a BRC train passing behind me. The Stevenson Expressway (I55) is to the left, I was driving by and noticed the two trains, so I pulled over to snap this photo.

ICG GP26 2601
Title:  ICG GP26 2601
Description:  Illinois Central Gulf GP26 2601, Chicago, Illinois, January, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built as Gulf Mobile & Ohio GP30 502 (c/n 27906) December 1962 on EMD Order 7635, it became one of only two GP26's. Note that the locomotive retained the AAR Type B trucks from Alco FA1 trade-in's. Here is the explanation from Dan Kohlberg: ICG's two GP26's were built in March and April of 1981. Gulf Mobile & Ohio GP30's 502 and 514 were rebuilt as ICG 2601 and 2602. Among the laundry list of changes (internal and external), they received the standard Paducah spartan cab along with a Paducah 88 inch nose. ICG left the turbocharger and the 2250 hp rating. The Paducah/ICG sales literature, however, listed the GP26 model as 2600 hp. Why? Well, consider what the original 'donor' locomotive to become a GP26 was supposed to be. ICG was trying to sell this to railroads with aging GP35 fleets. Paducah had intended to use a 2500 hp GP35 as the starting point, and upping the horsepower another 100... hence the 26 designation (and the carbody changes, in my opinion). ICG sorta 'faked' it with the GP30's. Since the GP26 program never made it beyond two locomotives, it is hard to speculate how the GP30 vs. GP35 rebuilds might have been classified, had the ICG continued to rebuild the ex-GM&O (or anyone else's) 30/35 fleet. Basically, the GP26 was ICG/Paducah's answer to a railroad buying a GP39-2 or GP39X new from EMD. (Remember, the 2600hp GP39Xs showed up on the SOU in late 1980) Bad timing for the ICG by about seven years. VMV/MK/EMD implemented a similar GP30/35 rebuild program for the BN starting in 1988.

ICG GP26 2601
Title:  ICG GP26 2601
Description:  Illinois Central Gulf GP-26 2601, Chicago, Illinois, January, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built as Gulf Mobile & Ohio GP-30 #502 (c/n #27906) December 1962 on order #7635, it became one of only two GP-26's built. The idea was to demonstrate ICG's Paducah Shops ability to remanufacture locomotives cost effectively to other railroads with aging second generation units. The intention was to use GP-35's as the starting point, up the horsepower a bit, thus achieving the suggested horsepower rating of the model designation. Instead, the demonstrators were two former GP-30's which retained their as-built 2250hp rating. The other GP26 was former GM&O GP30 514. This train is dropping down off the Saint Charles Air Line headed toward the former GM&O mainline. To the right are the leads to Dearborn Station, closed on May 2, 1971.

ICG GP26 2601
Title:  ICG GP26 2601
Description:  Illinois Central Gulf Railroad GP26 2601 sounthbound in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It's a cold day in Chicago and there is much to see in this photo. For instance, I assume that the station wagon parked on the embankment (below the yellow Railbox boxcar) belongs to the bridge tender, but the door on the shed on top of the bridge is open, so either he is careless, or the bridge is unattended. I think that might be Ashland Avenue passing below the tracks. The bridge carries the rails over an unnamed canal off the South Branch of the Chicago River. Looking at maps of this era, the unnamed canal appears to end at the north side of the Chicago's Union Stockyards. Thanks to a comment by Phil Gibby, we now know this unnamed canal's nickname is Bubbly Creek. Gases bubbling out of the riverbed from the decomposition of blood and entrails dumped into the river by the local stockyards in the early 20th century gave the creek its name. There are plenty of signalheads at the entrance to the bridge, I count eight, so perhaps the building on top of the bridge was also a dispatch point in earlier days. This is a serious bottleneck to the system, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the Santa Fe also had to drag their Super Chiefs across this bridge. The time is 12:12 PM, or so, if you believe the clock hands below the water tower in the upper left of the frame. I shot the photo, and I did not see the clock hands for 25 years. Was the clock functioning when I shot this photo, I don't know.
