IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local crosses Edna Ave. and approaches High St. as it heads southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails on Doty Island at Neenah, WI on 30 Mar. '20. Local was headed back to the yard in Neenah and had one locomotive, IC 9601. Levenhagen Oil Corp., 321 High St., can be seen to the left. Previously known as the Standard Oil Depot, the facility dates to at least 1893. The facility used to receive rail service, but has not for some time. It is hard to believe that there used to be four tracks crossing these two streets.

EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568
Title:  EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568
Description:  Looking south over the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard from the Winneconne Ave. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Locomotives include EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568. I wish I could photograph this scene without the handrail in the foreground, but the morons who designed this overpass (with the tacit approval of the morons who pretend to be the local government) only incorporated a sidewalk on one side of the bridge, the north side. There is no provision for bicycles to safely cross the overpass, except to use the unusually narrow sidewalk. However, the sidewalk is too narrow for bicycles and pedestrians to safely pass each other. Sure, bicyclists are legally entitled to use the roadway, but you will risk your life if you are foolish enough to exercise that legal right. The majority of motorists drive like idiots on Winneconne Ave. (as well as just about every other freeway, interstate, highway, county road, country road, back road, gravel road, dirt road, access road, public street, private street, driveway, pioneer trail, parking lot, and all-too-often sidewalk, in the United States). The Main St. overpass was ill-designed in the same manner. This ineptly designed overpass was constructed ca. 1988, so we will probably have to wait 20 years, or more, for an overpass with sufficient sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.

Title:  IC 9568 and IC 9601
Description:  A heavily powered CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 2 May '20. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the trains. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The Main St. overpass is in the background to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. Description:  A CN local passes the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 15 May '20. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible beyond the lead locomotive. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The east leg of the wye is in the foreground.

Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local services the Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI, on 18 May '20. The mill's Rail King is positioning a cut of loaded pulpwood cars for the local to pick up. The paper mill was founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883. It became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. Looking northeast from what was, until recently, Thilmany Rd. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (behind me to the left).

Description:  A CN local approaches the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI, on 18 May '20. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St., to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. The old depot became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago.

IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  IC 9601 works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Jul.'20. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. The tan 4- or 5-story facility partially visible above the locomotive was Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C) Neenah Nonwovens Facility, 1111 Henry St. It was slated to close by 31 May '19. It was purchased by 5K Fibres, based in Greenville, WI, ca. Apr. '20. One use for their melt-blown fabric is N-95 masks.

Description:  IC 9601 approaches the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it returns to the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Jul. '20. Union St. runs parallel just out-of-frame to the left. The former Sherry St., Caroline St., and Adams St. grade crossings can also be seen. Arrowhead Park and Little Lake Butte des Morts can be seen beyond the Main St. overpass. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to incense the "great" City of Neenah. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

IC 9601 and EJE 703
Title:  IC 9601 and EJE 703
Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 Aug. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna with at least 49 cars. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible through the trees. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. The train is nearing the turnout for the north leg of the wye.

IC 9601 and EJE 703
Title:  IC 9601 and EJE 703
Description:  IC 9601 and EJE 703 work the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 15 Aug. '20. Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local heads southwest via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 23 Aug. '20. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The local is transitioning from the former C&NW rails. The telephone pole beyond the nose of the locomotive stands along an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way. To the right you can see some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. and was completed ca. 3 Jul. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. To the left, a shiny, new, modern signal relay case stands where an awesome, old one once stood.

Description:  A CN local crosses Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails with 6 cars at Stroebe, WI, on 31 Oct. '20. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The former C&NW rails are in the foreground. The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background. They have a spur, but have not received rail service for quite a while. In fact, the turnout connecting their spur to the main line was torn out earlier this year.

Description:  A CN local rests on former C&NW rails at the Hwy. G overpass at Snells, WI, on 9 Apr. '22. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel on this side of the train.

Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge at Kaukauna, WI, on 24 Apr. '22. Kaukauna Lock 2, historically Lock No. 6, counting from Green Bay, is partially visible to the right. The Warren pony truss bridge was built in 1893, according to http://bridgehunter.com (another reference states 1901). The Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill looms in the background. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers) in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. The rehabilitation of the Kaukauna locks was completed in '15. The bridge was also rehabilitated in order to swing again. This view of the bridge was previously off limits. I wasn't sure if I was permitted to be here or not. I had heard that this was going to become a public recreation trail, but I don't know if it is officially open to the public yet. The fence gates have been removed, and I saw other people passing through, so I took that as a sign that the public was welcome.

Description:  A CN local crosses Thilmany Rd. as it prepares to service the Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill (out-of-frame to the right) via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI, on 24 Apr. '22. The train is crossing the new, rerouted portion of Thilmany Rd. and the locomotive is about to cross what was the original route of Thilmany Rd.
